Research Development

Responsibility: Provide resources for NOAO astronomers to be scientifically productive. These include funds for travel, page charges, conference registration, hosting workshops etc, as well as administrative support.

Roles

  • Ensure that each scientist has an annual "allowance" fund (the SPRF) for personal research.

  • Maintain pooled cash reserves for:

    • page charges

    • special needs beyond the SPRF allocation

    • office supplies

    • hosting workshops / science meetings

    • colloquium speaker support

    • visitor support (especially for scientists on sabbatical)

  • Operate a mentor program, with special focus for early- and mid-career scientists

  • Assist with colloquia, Friday lunch talks, and Tuesday science coffee, to recruit speakers

  • Provide an interface to the NOAO Director for scientific staff issues (either individual or collectively)

  • Monitor the functional and research load balance for each scientist

  • Maintain an information center identifying scientists with limited outside funding, who are interested in partnering with others to hire post-docs, data aides, or other assistants

  • Encourage facility directors to consider early-career scientists for observing time when discretionary opportunities arise
